First it was Jake Peavy, now The Houston Chronicle reports Astros starting pitcher Roy Oswalt would not agree to a trade that would bring him to the South Side.

Oswalt has three years remaining on his current deal, which includes a no-trade clause.

Update – Peavy turned the Sox down on Thursday night, deciding to stay with the Padres. It was unsure if the Sox’s 20-1 shell-shock loss had anything to do with his discussion. After Peavy’s intentions were made clear, White Sox general manager Ken Williams issued a statement.

“It was communicated to me earlier this evening that Jake Peavy is simply not yet ready to make a commitment to join the Chicago White Sox. I understand where Jake is coming from given the unusually early timing of this type of event,” Williams said. “It’s understandable that he was caught a bit off guard, as most people in his position would be. He has a wife and three young boys to consider, and Jake has earned the right to thoroughly think through this move.”

What the Cubs have tried to do during the off season, but couldn’t get done, might just happen on the South Side instead. The White Sox are close to finalizing a blockbuster trade for San Diego pitching ace Jake Peavy.  According to, The San Diego Union-Tribune, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black on Wednesday night to discuss a trade to the Sox, and it’s expected that the deal needs only Peavy’s approval for finalization. The Union-Tribune also reported that Peavy referred to his status as “something to think about” but that his preference is to continue pitching in the National League. The story states that Peavy respects the Sox’s aggressiveness but has reservations about pitching for manager Ozzie Guillen.

Peavy, is the ace of the Padres’ staff, with 3-5 record and a 3.82 ERA, along with 69 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings. Peavy will earn $11 million in 2009, $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011, $17 million in 2012 and a $22 million option for 2013 with a $4 million buyout.
